Mountaineer Men and woman at the Rocky Mountain Shootout Oct. 1 2006 - The Western State men and woman’s cross country teams both finished second in one of the major meets of the year Saturday in Boulder at the Rocky Mountain Shootout, a meet which featured 17 woman’s teams and 16 men’s teams, including 5 division I squads. The Western State men finished second to arch rival Adams State in the Division II competition, 20-53. In the overall scoring involving both Divisions I and II the Mountaineers finished third with 105 points. Adams state defeated second ranked Division I CU Buffaloes, 31-44. For the Mountaineers, sophomore Kim Hogarth finished second overall with a time of 24:49 over the 8,030-meter course, one of the fastest WSC times ever ran on that course. Junior Scott Dahlberg finished 19th, seniors Zach Cordel (24th), Cole Murch (28th) and Andrew Hoffman (32nd) were the top five finishers. Freshman Tyler Pennel who ran the Open Race was 16th and John Butkey, who also ran the open race was 10th and their times would have put them 2nd and 3rd for the Mountaineers. The Western State Women finished second to Adams State, the Defending national champions in the Division II race, 38-53 and in the combined DI and DII scoring, were 4th behind Colorado, CSU and Adams State. The women had a combined total of 120 points. Esther Komen was 10th for the Mountaineers and then came junior Agens Kroneraff (22nd), freshman Anne Ronoh (27th) and juniors Shannon Filar (29th) and Natalie Provost (32nd). The Western State men are ranked third in the latest national rankings and the women are ranked 4th. The Mountaineers have this weekend off and then will run W Mountain Race on October 14, It will Be the 55th annual running of the race and a special ceremony dedicating a plaque with all the men and women champions will also be held.
