Komen Named NCAA Division II Cross Country Athlete of the Year
(Nov. 25, 2006) Western State's Esther Komen has been named the NCAA Division II Cross Country Athlete of the Year the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Wednesday afternoon.
Komen earned the honor after cruising to the D-II Individual National Championship last Saturday. The native of Kenya finished the race in 20:09.4, which easily out-distanced Mass-Lowell's Nicole Plante (20:15.6).
The victory meant a clean sweep of the RMAC Championship, North Central Regional Championship and the NCAA Division II National Championships for Komen. Last year as a true freshman, the Iten, Kenya native finished second in all three races.
Komen joined Elva Dryer (1993 and 1994), Tuma Urio (1995) and Hannah Lawrence (2001) as Western State's only Female Individual National Champions.
