Mountaineer Men and Women both Qualify for Nationals

Nov 4, Wayne, NE - The Western State College men and women's cross country teams came up with sterling performances Saturday in Wayne, Nebraska and qualified for the upcoming NCAA II National Championships in Pensacola, Florida on November 18. The Mountaineer men, running 10,000 meters for the first time in a race this fall, finished 2nd to number one ranked Adams State 26-55. Western's Kim Hogarth, a sophomore, won the race to claim the individual Regional Champion crown with a fine time of 30:33. He was followed by sophomore Aaron Clark - 6th, senior Cole Murch - 11th and junior Scott Dahlberg 14th. All four gained All-Region honors in the 134 men field. The Mountaineers' fifth man was jason Graham who was 23rd; then came freshman Aaron Flower - 29th and senior Andrew Hoffman - 31st. The Mountaineers are defending national cross country champions and are currently ranked 5th in the nation.

The Western State women, ranked 3rd in the nation, pulled off an upset, beating 2nd place Adams State 40-48 over the 6,000 meter course. The Mountaineer women were led by sophomore Esther Komen who won the race with a sparkling time of 20:58. Komen was closely followed by junior Agnes Kroneraff who closed fast and finished 2nd with a time of 21:08. Freshman Elsa Goshu finished 9th, freshman Anne Ronah - 13th and junior Natalie Provost - 15th. All five women received All-Region honors. The Mountaineers showed fine depth with their 6th and 7th runners - junior Shannon Filar and sophomore Jenny Hockman - who finished 19th and 20th respectively in the 150 women field. The Mountaineer women finished 3rd in the 2005 NCAA II National Championship
