Bodor and Michel Take W Mountain Championships

Western State assistant coach Jennifer Michel won the 56th running of the W Mountain Race Saturday. Michel won the woman’s competition – a 2.8 mile uphill run – for the  forth time in a time of 22.52.  Hot on her  heels was Western State Nordic skier, Ashley Qiggle in  23:08 and Western State cross country runner Molly Clauss in 23.51. The weather was cloudy and 41 degrees and 146 runners competed.
In the men’s competition, Western State redshirt distance runner Oliver Bordor was the winner in a near record time of 16:52. All-American Steeplechaser Dennis leck set the record in 1985 in 16:38. Bodor was closely followed by WSC assistant coach Tim Parr in 16:59 and WSC assistant coach Ryan Bak in 17:40. The non-collegiate, open race was started in 1951 as a training run for the Western State Ski Team and is the oldest race in Colorado history.
WSC skier Ed Aly, who started the race in 1951 was on hand as a plaque put up by 4 time winner John Burritt was dedicated on the top of the mountain following the race. The plaque contains the names of all the men and woman who have won the race and hangs in the Western State College gymnasium. Many of the former winners were on hand during the plaque dedication.
